Week 7 homework

1) QUESTIONS & ANSWERS:

What connection does the company Compuserve have with GIFs?

CompuServe introduced the GIF format in 1987 to provide a color image format for their file downloading areas, replacing their earlier run-length encoding (RLE) format, which was black and white only. GIF became popular because it used LZW data compression, which was more efficient than the run-length encoding that formats such as PCX and MacPaint used, and fairly large images could therefore be downloaded in a reasonably short time, even with very slow modems.

Please explain image optimization for the Web?

The objective of image optimazation is to give the viewer the best possible experience. For this, it is required to provide: 1) clear access to good information; 2) a professional, well-executed design to help create a high-performing work environment. The main consideration is how your viewers will view your pages. This will deped on: 1) monitor size and resolution; 2) browser brand and version level; 3) speed of Internet/Intranet connection; and 4) how much time your viewers can spend on your pages. Image optimazation hinges on both image quality and reducing file size.

How does screen resolution affect a website?

Screen resolution can affect the overall usability and accessibility of your Web site. The term "screen resolution" refers to the number of individual pixels that fit within a given space. Monitor size and optimal screen resolution are closely linked. As you increase the resolution, the screen elements appear smaller. That means a GIF image will look smaller on the 15-inch monitor than on the 21-inch monitor. It is therefore best to: 1) Study your log files to determine the most popular browsers and browser versions; 2) Become familiar with the major assistive technologies used by visitors with disabilities; 3) Test your site in multiple browsers, versions, screen resolutions and operating system combinations; 4) Reference online user surveys to learn more about demographics, browser, and screen resolution preferences.

What does it mean to be Section 508 compliant?

Section 508 requires that Federal agencies' electronic and information technology is accessible to people with disabilities.

2) DEMONSTRATE YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF DISJOINTED ROLLOVER IMAGES

The objective of a disjointed rollover image: You have an image in one location on your Web page and, when the user places their pointer over that image, you want their action to trigger another image to be swapped with different image.

See homepage for example.

3) DEMONSTRATE YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF IMAGE MAPS

An image map is a list of coordinates relating to a specific image, created in order to hyperlink areas of the image to various destinations (as opposed to a normal image link, in which the entire area of the image links to a single destination). The intention of an image map is to provide an easy way of linking various parts of an image without dividing the image into separate image files.

A funny example of an image map can be viewed here.
